Winfred Wangui: The Woman Linked to Kibaki Who Nearly Wed Controversial Armenian Artur Margaryan
From Diplomat to Scandal: How Love, Politics, and Criminal Allegations Shaped Winfred Wangui’s Public Life
Winfred Wangui, daughter of former Othaya Member of Parliament and prominent businesswoman Mary Wambui, has remained a figure of intrigue in Kenya’s political and social circles. Her life gained attention not only because of her reputed ties to the late President Mwai Kibaki but also due to her near-marriage to the notorious Armenian businessman Artur Margaryan.
Background and Family Ties
Wangui is the daughter of Mary Wambui, who was romantically linked to President Kibaki during his tenure. This connection sparked public speculation that Wangui could be the former Head of State’s daughter. During a 2007 interview with Easy FM, Wangui confirmed her full name as Winfred Wangui Mwai but declined to elaborate on her ties to the Kibaki family, stating, “Those who know the truth will stay with the truth.”
Career in Government
Though the details of her professional life are somewhat private, Wangui served as an official in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during President Kibaki’s regime. It was through this role that she first encountered Artur Margaryan, whose later notoriety would embroil her in controversy.
The Artur Margaryan Affair
Wangui met the Armenian brothers, Artur Margaryan and Sargsyan, during a holiday in Dubai in 2005 through a mutual friend. Initially, their interaction was strictly professional, centered around “general trading.” However, Wangui later admitted that her working relationship with Artur developed into a romantic one, declaring him her boyfriend and expressing hopes for a future together, including marriage and children.
The JKIA Scandal and Interdiction
The Artur brothers made headlines in 2006 when they were deported from Kenya following a security breach at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). Reports claimed they had manhandled security personnel and brandished guns to evade customs checks. Wangui, along with other civil servants, was interdicted after allegations emerged that she used her office to facilitate VIP treatment for the brothers.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga later described the brothers as mercenaries allegedly contracted to eliminate political opponents. Immigration Minister Gideon Konchellah officially reported them to President Kibaki as international criminals, cementing the scandal as one of Kenya’s most sensational political controversies of the time.
Wangui’s story remains a mix of politics, romance, and scandal—a testament to how closely personal and professional lives can intersect in the public eye.
