The Kenyan government has awarded a KSh375.4 billion contract for the expansion and modernization of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), marking one of the largest infrastructure deals in the country's recent history.

According to reports, the Chinese state-owned firm secured the contract under the National Infrastructure Fund (NIF), a financing mechanism established by the government to support major infrastructure projects. The deal comes months after President William Ruto announced that construction works on the airport upgrade would commence in June 2026 following the mobilization of seed capital for the fund.

Major Upgrade for Kenya's Busiest Airport

The JKIA expansion project is expected to significantly improve the airport's capacity and efficiency as Kenya seeks to strengthen its position as a regional aviation hub. Planned works include the enhancement of existing terminal facilities, modernization of passenger processing systems, and upgrades to key airport infrastructure.
The project is part of a broader government strategy aimed at improving transport and logistics infrastructure to support economic growth and attract investment into the country.

Funding Through National Infrastructure Fund
The National Infrastructure Fund, established earlier this year, is expected to play a central role in financing the airport project. The fund received seed capital from the government's privatization initiatives, including the sale of shares in Kenya Pipeline Company.
Government officials have previously indicated that the airport modernization project will be implemented in phases to minimize disruptions to airport operations while ensuring continued growth in passenger and cargo handling capacity.

Chinese Firms' Growing Presence in Kenya
The award further cements the role of Chinese companies in Kenya's infrastructure development. Chinese contractors have previously participated in major projects including the Nairobi Expressway, the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), and several highway developments across the country.
