Kenya's First New International Stadium in Nearly Four Decades

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has announced that the 60,000-seat Talanta Sports City in Nairobi is nearing completion, describing it as Kenya's first newly built international stadium in almost 40 years.
Speaking after inspecting the project along Ngong Road on Tuesday, Kindiki said the facility represents a major milestone in the country's sports infrastructure. He noted that Kenya has not constructed a new international-standard stadium since the completion of the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, in 1987.

Construction Progress

According to the Deputy President, the stadium is in its final stages of construction, with work progressing around the clock under a 24-hour schedule. He attributed the project's steady progress to close supervision by personnel from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), who are overseeing the contractor's work to ensure timely completion.
During the inspection, Kindiki met construction workers and commended them for their contribution to what he described as a landmark national project.

Key Facility for AFCON 2027
Talanta Sports City is expected to play a central role in Kenya's preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which the country will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania. The stadium has been designed primarily for football and rugby and will have a seating capacity of 60,000.

Broader Sports Infrastructure Programme
Kindiki also said the government is undertaking the largest sports infrastructure programme in Kenya's history, with 31 additional stadiums under construction across the country. He said the investment is intended to improve sports facilities, nurture talent, and position Kenya to host major international sporting events.
The Talanta Sports City project is among the government's flagship infrastructure developments aimed at strengthening the country's sporting capacity and supporting Kenya's commitments ahead of AFCON 2027.
