The United States Embassy in Nairobi has issued a security alert advising American citizens to exercise heightened caution in Nairobi and other parts of Kenya ahead of the annual Saba Saba demonstrations.
In the advisory, the embassy warned that July 7 could be marked by large gatherings, protests, increased police deployment, road closures, and traffic disruptions, particularly in Nairobi's Central Business District and other urban centres. The alert noted that demonstrations may affect movement and public services, urging U.S. citizens to remain vigilant and avoid areas where protests are taking place.

The embassy advised its citizens to:

Avoid demonstration areas and large crowds.
Monitor local media for updates on the security situation.
Expect traffic delays, roadblocks, and possible disruptions to transport services.
Keep identification documents accessible.
Follow instructions issued by Kenyan security authorities.
Maintain communication with family and friends regarding travel plans.

Increased Security Measures
The advisory comes as Kenyan security agencies intensify operations ahead of the Saba Saba commemorations. Police have mounted roadblocks on major highways leading into Nairobi and increased patrols in strategic locations as authorities prepare for possible demonstrations.
Saba Saba, observed annually on July 7, commemorates Kenya's pro-democracy movement and has in recent years become a day associated with public protests and heightened security operations.

Embassy Urges Vigilance
The U.S. Embassy emphasized that while peaceful demonstrations are lawful, such gatherings can change rapidly and become unpredictable. It encouraged American citizens to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel to affected areas, and review their personal security plans until the situation stabilizes.
