Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has publicly condemned the increasing use of young people to fuel political violence. He emphasizes the necessity for leaders to shift their focus from exploiting youth for political gains to investing in their potential through initiatives such as employment, skills training, and entrepreneurship support.
Advocating for Youth Empowerment and Development
During an event at Tononoka Grounds where 1,300 boda boda operators received their licenses, Nassir highlighted that Kenya’s youth should be seen as partners in national development, not as tools for unrest. His administration’s support for sectors like boda boda transportation exemplifies how government policies can generate opportunities rather than unrest.
"Our youth deserve more than mere handouts from politicians who incite trouble," Nassir stated. "They deserve leaders committed to creating opportunities, investing in their potential, and supporting their businesses, so they can have a genuine stake in our country’s future."
This stance aligns with ongoing efforts by the Mombasa government to foster economic growth and social stability among young people, contrasting sharply with narratives that seek to manipulate youth for political ends.
The move to prioritize youth empowerment reflects a broader governance strategy aimed at sustainable development and social cohesion in Mombasa and Kenya at large. By focusing on constructive engagement, the administration hopes to reduce the appeal of political violence fueled by marginalization and lack of opportunity.
