Silas Nyanchwani: From Aspiring Doctor to Kenya’s Bold Voice in Literature and Lifestyle Commentary

The Journey of a Prolific Writer Who Turned Passion into a Career

Making a name for yourself through writing is one of the most fulfilling careers in the world. Not only does it ignite creativity, but it also provides a platform to influence thought and inspire change. For Silas Nyanchwani, one of Kenya’s most compelling authors and columnists, this journey began with a childhood dream far from the world of literature—medicine.

From Childhood Dreams to a Writing Career

Like many young Kenyans, Nyanchwani once dreamed of becoming a doctor. However, as he progressed through school, he realized that the grades required for medicine were beyond his reach. Rather than letting this setback define him, he redirected his energy towards another ambition: writing.

After completing his secondary education at Nyamagwa Boys High School, Nyanchwani began sending letters to newspaper editors, determined to see his name in print. His persistence paid off when some of his articles were published in featured segments, setting him on a path toward a luminous career in the fourth estate.

Nyanchwani later pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Literature at the University of Nairobi, further honing his craft.

Columns That Spark Conversations

Nyanchwani quickly became known for thought-provoking columns in leading newspapers including Nation, Standard, and The Nairobian. His column Retrosexual in The Nairobian brought attention to often-neglected lifestyle issues, earning him recognition and sparking widespread conversations.

The Breakthrough Novel: Sexorcised

In 2019, Nyanchwani stepped away from newspaper columns to focus on a novel he had been crafting for eight years. Published in 2020, Sexorcised became an instant hit in Kenya.

The novel tells the story of a Kisii man whose marriage collapses, leading to a divorce. Nyanchwani explores the emotional fallout for men after divorce, highlighting the coping mechanisms some adopt, including alcoholism and pursuing younger women. The book’s raw, unflinching approach to sensitive issues makes it both provocative and compelling, though Nyanchwani believes it would be nearly impossible to adapt into a film.

“The aim was to tell the story of this man in the most honest, raw way possible,” says Nyanchwani.

Guiding the Next Generation: 50 Memos to Men

In 2021, Nyanchwani published 50 Memos to Men, a book offering practical advice to men about relationships and life. Recognizing that parents—especially those of Gen Z—often lack the time to guide their sons on these matters, Nyanchwani fills the gap with candid, hard-hitting guidance.

A Legacy in the Making

Silas Nyanchwani’s journey from aspiring doctor to bestselling author and influential columnist highlights the power of persistence, passion, and storytelling. Through his books and columns, he continues to provoke thought, challenge societal norms, and offer guidance to generations of Kenyans navigating life’s complexities.
