Washington Names Veteran Diplomat Henry Wooster for Nairobi Posting
U.S. President Donald Trump has nominated Henry Wooster to serve as the next United States Ambassador to Kenya, marking a significant step in Washington's diplomatic engagement with Nairobi.
According to a nomination list submitted to the U.S. Senate by the White House on June 1, 2026, Wooster, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister-Counselor, has been nominated to serve as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States to the Republic of Kenya. The nomination is subject to Senate confirmation before he can formally assume office.
If confirmed, Wooster will succeed the current diplomatic leadership at the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, where the ambassadorial position has remained vacant following the departure of former ambassador Meg Whitman in 2024. The embassy has since been led by chargé d'affaires officials.
Wooster brings extensive diplomatic experience to the role, having served in several senior foreign service positions. His nomination comes at a time when Kenya and the United States continue to deepen cooperation in areas including trade, security, regional stability, climate action, and investment.
Kenya -us relations remain strong
Kenya remains one of Washington's key strategic partners in East Africa, hosting major U.S. diplomatic, security, and development initiatives. The two countries have maintained close relations on counterterrorism efforts, economic cooperation, and regional peacebuilding programs.
The nomination now moves to the U.S. Senate, where lawmakers will review Wooster's credentials and conduct confirmation proceedings. Once confirmed, he will present his credentials to President William Ruto before officially taking up the ambassadorial post in Nairobi.
