Stephen Mukangai is a name synonymous with football commentary in Kenya. Known for his captivating live radio commentaries and engaging sports news reporting, Mukangai has been instrumental in boosting Radio Maisha’s ratings over the past decade. His unique blend of humor, rich Swahili diction, and creative storytelling keeps listeners hooked and has earned him a massive following on social media.

Early Life and Education: The Foundation of a Football Legend

Mukangai began his education at Namshiya Primary School in Malava, Kakamega County, before joining Ingotse High School, where he completed his O-levels in 2005. His school days shaped his identity, earning him the nickname “Ingotse all-time top scorer.”

After high school, Mukangai faced financial hardships. Between 2005 and 2006, he took up manual labor, helping renovate roads near his home for just Ksh 70 a day. In 2007, he moved to Nairobi in hopes of pursuing journalism through a full scholarship offered by an NGO. Unfortunately, the offer was repeatedly postponed, delaying his plans.

Determined to follow his dream, Mukangai eventually enrolled in journalism studies at the Kenya Institute of Media and Technology and later at the Kenya College of Communication (now Multimedia University).

Journey into Media: From Kibera Slums to Live Commentary

Life in Nairobi was tough. Failing to secure a journalism job initially, Mukangai took on manual labor in construction sites, commuting daily from the Kibera slums to Gachie in Kiambu County—sometimes waking up at 3 a.m. to make the trek.

In 2010, he reached out to Radio Maisha’s Ali Hassan Kauleni. Though his first attempt was unsuccessful, he left his contacts and soon received a call that would change his career. During auditions, Mukangai showcased his football knowledge, scoring 9/10 in trivia compared to 3/10 by a fellow candidate.

His first live commentary test came unexpectedly when Kauleni ambushed him, sending him live for a match between Red Berrets and Ulinzi Stars. Mukangai’s precise reading of the starting lineups impressed everyone and marked the beginning of a celebrated career in sports media.

From manual laborer to one of Kenya’s top football commentators, Stephen Mukangai’s journey is a testament to perseverance, passion, and relentless dedication.
