The reduction in electricity costs will take effect this month, offering relief to households, businesses and industries as the government moves to lower energy expenses and support economic activity.

Lower Power Bills Take Effect in June.

Kenyans will pay less for electricity beginning June 2026 following a government announcement that power costs have been reduced by KSh 0.2685 per kilowatt-hour (kWh).

Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi said the reduction is aimed at easing the cost of living and lowering operational expenses for businesses across the country. The adjustment will be reflected in electricity bills issued from June.

According to the Ministry of Energy, the decrease has been driven by a decline in the foreign exchange adjustment component, lower fuel energy costs and improved hydropower generation, which has reduced reliance on more expensive sources of electricity.

The latest reduction comes days after the government withdrew a proposed electricity tariff review that could have led to higher power charges for consumers. Officials said the decision was intended to protect households, manufacturers and other electricity users from increased costs while maintaining stability in the energy sector.

The government maintains that efforts to increase the share of affordable renewable energy sources, including hydropower, are helping to stabilize electricity prices and improve affordability for consumers.
Industry players are expected to benefit from the lower energy costs, which could help reduce production expenses and support economic growth.
