George Ruto, the youngest son of William Ruto, is steadily making a name for himself in Nairobi’s vibrant matatu industry through his high-end PSV brand, Raptor Family.
The fleet comprises four premium matatus—Money Fest, Matrix, Mood, and the original Raptor—each distinguished by bold customization and standout aesthetics. From booming sound systems and graffiti art to bespoke rims and striking LED lighting, these vehicles are designed to command attention while offering a unique passenger experience. They primarily operate along busy Nairobi routes such as Ngong and Embakasi.
Among the fleet, Matrix—which was acquired from a friend—quickly rose to popularity, while the original Raptor has recently undergone a major transformation. Now repainted in white, it features upgraded off-cut rims, graffiti, football-field-inspired LED lighting, and prominent branding for Jamhuri Soccer Academy, positioning it not just as a PSV, but also a mobile marketing platform.
Earnings and Profitability
Insights from crew members reveal the strong earning potential behind these luxury matatus. One driver, Kinara, previously assigned to Money Fest, disclosed that the vehicle—valued at approximately KSh 20 million—generates about KSh 500,000 monthly, translating to roughly KSh 16,667 per day assuming consistent operations.
This estimate is supported by conductor Collins Waweru, who notes that premium PSVs often spend minimal time at bus stages due to high passenger demand, enabling them to complete more trips and maximize revenue.
Based on these figures, George Ruto’s four-matatu fleet could potentially bring in up to KSh 2 million per month, or approximately KSh 66,667 daily. However, actual earnings are likely lower due to varying performance across the vehicles.
For instance, Mood, which has a smaller seating capacity of 25 passengers, generates around KSh 20,000 profit on a typical day, but can earn up to KSh 80,000 when hired privately. Additionally, operational factors such as fuel costs, maintenance downtime, crew salaries, and regulatory requirements significantly impact net profits.
A Growing Influence in the Matatu Sector
Despite these variables, the Raptor Family brand highlights the lucrative possibilities within Kenya’s matatu sector—especially when innovation, branding, and customer experience are prioritized. George Ruto’s approach reflects a new wave of investment in public transport, where style meets strategy to create both cultural impact and commercial success.
