Discover how one of Mombasa’s richest men built a multi-industry empire spanning energy, real estate, and investment ventures
Suleiman Shahbal is a name that resonates in Kenyan business circles, particularly in Mombasa County. Known for his diverse investment portfolio, Shahbal has built a reputation not just as a businessman but as a strategic investor whose ventures span energy, real estate, and financial services. His holdings have played a role in reshaping city skylines, powering businesses, and creating employment opportunities across Kenya.
Shahbal’s Energy Ventures
Gulf Power Limited – Energizing Kenya’s Future
At the heart of Shahbal’s energy interests is Gulf Power Limited, an Independent Power Producer (IPP) supplying electricity to Kenya Power under a contract valid until 2034. Shahbal is a director and beneficial owner in both Gulf Power Limited and Noora Power Limited, holding a 50% stake in the latter. Noora Power Limited itself owns 10% of Gulf Power Limited, while Shahbal and his co-director, Francis Koome Njogu, are also believed to have additional shares through Gallant Power Limited, a Mauritius-registered company controlling 80% of Gulf Power Limited.
Through these ventures, Shahbal has positioned himself as a significant player in Kenya’s energy sector, contributing to the nation’s electricity supply and industrial growth.
Gulf Energy – Oil and Fuel Investments
Shahbal has also been a key stakeholder in Gulf Energy, one of Kenya’s leading oil marketing companies. In 2019, the French-listed Rubis Group, through its subsidiary Rubis Energie, acquired a controlling stake in Gulf Energy in a deal worth Ksh 16.4 billion. Prior to this acquisition, Shahbal held a 25% stake through Monte Carlo Investments Limited. Additionally, Mauritius-listed Auron Energy is a shareholder, reflecting Shahbal’s strong foothold in the energy sector and his strategic approach to partnerships and growth.
GulfCap Group – Investment and Financial Advisory
Founded in 2006 alongside Jamil Qureshi, the GulfCap Group (GCG) is an international network of companies providing investment banking, corporate finance, and advisory services. With offices in London, Lisbon, Dubai, and Lahore, GCG serves high-net-worth clients and institutional investors. Over time, prominent shareholders such as Overseas Investment SPC, Skyline Investment SPC, and wealthy individuals from the Middle East joined the venture, solidifying its reputation as a leading investment consultancy across multiple continents.
GulfCap Real Estate – Transforming City Skylines
Shahbal’s business empire extends into property development through GulfCap Real Estate, headquartered in Nairobi. The company is behind landmark projects such as Buxton Point in Mombasa and Starehe Point in Nairobi, both recognized for their modern design and strategic locations.
Among Shahbal’s most ambitious ventures is the Ksh 120 billion LV Marina project in Kisumu, developed in partnership with the Odinga family on 285 acres of land owned by the late Raila Odinga. The project is expected to create thousands of jobs for residents of Kisumu and neighboring counties, while boosting the local economy through residential, commercial, and leisure developments.
A Visionary Business Leader
Suleiman Shahbal’s journey from energy production to real estate development shows the breadth of his vision and influence. Through strategic investments in critical sectors, he continues to leave a lasting mark on Kenya’s business landscape, shaping industries and communities alike.
