Sarah Ng’ang’a: From Nurse to Entrepreneur – How a Slip Disk Inspired Juja Modern Hospital
Sarah Ng’ang’a, the founder of Juja Modern Hospital in Kiambu County, turned a personal health setback into a thriving healthcare enterprise. Once a dedicated nurse at St. Scholastica Uzima Hospital in Nairobi, Sarah’s career was cut short when she developed slip disk complications, forcing her into early retirement.
A Vision Born from Adversity
During her physiotherapy sessions at Aga Khan Hospital, Sarah was advised to avoid heavy lifting. It was during this period of recovery that she envisioned opening her own medical facility. A devout Christian, she credits her faith and mentors, including Sister Rosa Pascal, for strengthening her resolve. Sarah also recalls receiving prophetic guidance from Pastor Maina Njagi, who predicted that her injury would lead to an entrepreneurial opportunity in healthcare.
Turning Dreams into Reality
Determined to act on her vision, Sarah searched for space to establish her hospital and found an unfinished building in Juja Town. With limited funds, she borrowed from a friend and convinced her family to sell a plot in Embakasi to finance the project. Navigating legal hurdles to secure the sale, she purchased equipment and recruited her first staff—two clinical officers and three nurses.
The early months were challenging. Slow business led to staff departures, and partnerships with two medical doctors ended abruptly when they withdrew their investment. Undeterred, Sarah struck a deal with Trust Med Suppliers to replace equipment, offering proceeds from her home as repayment. She also obtained NHIF accreditation to boost the hospital’s credibility.
Overcoming Financial Hurdles
Rent arrears of Ksh1.6 million led to a landlord locking part of the hospital. With help from the local chief and a legal team led by Bernard Odero Okello, she obtained a court order to prevent eviction. Even when auctioneers seized her equipment in violation of the court order, legal intervention secured its return.
A Twist of Fate
A breakthrough came when an investor from the UK purchased her home, enabling Sarah to clear debts, pay rent in advance, and expand her property holdings in Kenyatta Road Estate. Today, Juja Modern Hospital stands as a testament to resilience, faith, and entrepreneurial determination.
