Charles Thuo’s journey from Kenya to the United States is a story of courage, determination, and adaptability. Leaving Kenya in 1999 with dreams of higher education, Charles navigated cultural shocks, long working hours, and personal sacrifices to carve a life in a new country.

“I moved to the United States in 2010. I had just completed my first year at Kenyatta University when I got the chance to transition abroad,” Charles recalls. Growing up, he was captivated by the opportunities in the West, fueled by admiration for its advancements and possibilities.

Yet, the path was not straightforward. Charles recounts borrowing a bank statement from a family friend to meet visa requirements. “It helped that he had studied in the U.S. himself and understood, though he felt I should complete my undergraduate degree first. But I was determined to go,” he says.

The visa process at the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi was rigorous. “They took time to verify my KCSE certificates and asked why I wanted to move to the U.S. when I had already been admitted to study civil engineering in Kenya. I told them that Kenya had poor roads and I wanted to study in the U.S. and come back to make a difference,” Charles explains. A three-minute interview later, he received his visa—the golden ticket to his dream.

Arriving in a new country brought its own hurdles. “The food was challenging—I couldn’t find ugali or other Kenyan dishes,” he recalls. Adjusting to the culture was also difficult. “In Africa, there’s a strong sense of community; over there, it’s different.”

To support his education, Charles took a demanding job in a warehouse, working nights while attending classes in the afternoon. “I would go to school from 3 pm to 9 pm, then work from 10 pm to 4 am, sleeping only three to four hours. You literally have no life,” he says. He emphasizes that many immigrants struggle with similar grueling routines and often return home after a few years due to the intensity.

Charles Thuo’s journey is a testament to perseverance, resilience, and the lengths one can go to chase a dream. From a young Kenyan student to an immigrant navigating a foreign land, his story captures the human spirit of determination in the pursuit of success.
