The Kenya Police Service has implemented a series of senior officer transfers aimed at bolstering operational efficiency within specialized units and at police headquarters. These changes come amid recent security breaches that prompted a review of the presidential security arrangements.
Reorganization of the Presidential Security Team Following Kilifi Security Breach
In a move to strengthen the presidential escort and overall security operations, the Kenya Police Service has appointed Sawe as the new commander of the presidential security team, succeeding Maiyo, who has been moved to the Vigilance Department at the Kenya Police Headquarters. This reorganization is part of a broader effort to enhance security protocols and prevent future breaches.
Deputy Inspector General of Police, Eliud Lagat, announced the reshuffle, which includes several other senior personnel adjustments within elite units such as the Police Elite Unit (PEU) and the Recce Squad. These changes aim to optimize police operations at a strategic level and reinforce leadership within critical security units.
Notably, Mr. Juda Mathews Gwiyo, who served as Deputy Commandant of the PEU, has been asked to proceed on leave pending retirement, while Mr. Josphat Sirma has been promoted from Deputy Commanding Officer to Commanding Officer in the Recce Sub Unit. Meanwhile, Mr. Rere Kipkoech's transfer to the Vigilance Department reflects ongoing efforts to streamline command structures.
The recent security breach in Kilifi led to a wider overhaul of the presidential protection team, emphasizing the need for rigorous security measures and accountable leadership. The changes are expected to bolster the integrity and effectiveness of Kenya’s top security units, reassuring the public of the government’s commitment to national security.
