KRA to Modernise Tax Filing by Replacing Excel-Based Returns
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is set to phase out the use of Microsoft Excel templates for filing certain tax returns and replace them with a fully web-based filing system as part of its digital transformation agenda.
The move is expected to simplify tax compliance by allowing taxpayers to prepare and submit returns directly through KRA's online platform without first downloading and completing Excel spreadsheets.
According to reports, the transition aims to reduce filing errors, improve efficiency, and enhance data accuracy while making the tax filing process faster for individuals and businesses.
Why the Change Matters
The current system requires taxpayers to download Excel worksheets, complete them offline, validate the information, and then upload the files to KRA's iTax system. The new web-based platform will eliminate several of these steps by allowing users to enter data directly online.
KRA expects the change to improve user experience, reduce technical challenges associated with Excel files, and strengthen tax administration through real-time validation of information.
Part of Digital Reforms
The planned migration is part of KRA's broader strategy to digitise tax administration and improve service delivery through technology. The authority has in recent years introduced several online services aimed at increasing tax compliance and easing access to government services.
