President William Ruto on Saturday officially commissioned the Diani Modern Market in Kwale County, a vital initiative designed to improve trading conditions for hundreds of small-scale traders in the region.
Enhancing Trade Infrastructure in Kwale
The recently completed market, launched in June 2024, now serves as a hub for over 300 traders selling fresh produce and other goods. The facility also includes an ICT centre and dedicated breastfeeding and resting areas for mothers, reflecting the government's commitment to supporting local traders and improving market conditions.
During the commissioning, Market Chairman Sebastian Musembi highlighted the previous challenges traders faced operating in open-air markets, especially during adverse weather conditions. He emphasized the importance of this new market in providing a safer and more conducive environment for trading activities.
President Ruto's visit also included laying foundations for additional markets at the Kenya-Tanzania border and in Mkunguni/Ganze, projects meant to foster trade and economic growth within the coastal region. These efforts form part of the government’s broader strategy to expand trading infrastructure and support small and medium enterprises.
As the tour concludes in Mombasa, where the Makupa Modern Market foundation will be laid, it underscores a focused effort to transform trade spaces across the coast. This initiative is expected to pave the way for further growth in local commerce, benefiting traders and consumers alike.
