Musa Mulwo: KMTC Graduate Behind Kabarnet’s Largest Private Hospital

From Humble Beginnings to Founding Tionycare Hospital

On a typical sweltering afternoon in Kabarnet town, the headquarters of Baringo County, banners proudly direct residents and visitors to Tionycare Hospital. Accredited by NHIF (now SHA) in 2023, it is the only level 4 private medical facility in the area. The three-storey hospital, located next to the Catholic Church, towers over neighboring buildings, signaling modern healthcare access in the growing town.

The Man Behind Tionycare.

Musa Mulwo, a seasoned medic with over 30 years of experience, is the visionary behind Tionycare Hospital. Raised in the quiet village of Kapwang, Kabartonjo, Mulwo attended Kabartonjo Primary School (CPE 1976), Kituro High School (‘O’ levels), and Kisii High School (‘A’ levels). He later joined Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), Nairobi Campus, earning a Diploma in Pharmacy.

His early medical career saw him work at Nakuru Provincial General Hospital, Kabarnet, and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret. He also gained experience with the Bamako Institute, an NGO sponsored by UNICEF, focused on disease prevention and treatment in Baringo.

Founding Clinics to Bridge Healthcare Gaps.

Mulwo recognized a critical healthcare gap in Baringo. “A sick person here can die not because the disease is untreatable, but because modern medical facilities are out of reach,” he shared.

In 1998, he opened Tionybei Medical Clinic and Diagnostic Laboratory in Kabarnet, followed by clinics in Marigat and Kabartonjo. These clinics laid the foundation for more comprehensive healthcare services.

Establishing Tionycare Hospital.

In 2021, Mulwo realized his vision by opening Tionycare Hospital, a level 4 facility equipped with:

A fully operational laboratory

Surgical theatres

Dental clinic

Male, female, pediatric, private, and VIP wards

The hospital’s logo—a fish—reflects Mulwo’s faith, inspired by Matthew 17:27, symbolizing guidance, provision, and trust. Tionycare’s core values, encapsulated in the acronym FISH, emphasize:

F – Patient first

I – Integrity

S – Service

H – Honour of dignity, individuality, and rights of everyone

Musa Mulwo’s journey from a rural village to running Kabarnet’s largest private hospital illustrates a blend of medical expertise, entrepreneurship, and faith-driven principles, bringing quality healthcare closer to Baringo residents.
