Tech giant Meta Platforms has officially launched paid subscription plans for its flagship social media platforms in a major move aimed at reducing its long-standing dependence on advertising revenue.
The company announced the rollout of premium services for Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, marking one of the biggest changes to Meta’s business model in recent years.

According to the company, the new subscription services — branded as Facebook Plus, Instagram Plus and WhatsApp Plus — will offer users access to enhanced features, customization tools and exclusive premium experiences while keeping the standard versions of the apps free.
Meta’s Head of Product Naomi Gleit announced the development through a video statement shared on Instagram, saying the subscriptions are designed to give users “more control, more creativity and more value” across Meta’s platforms.

Cost of the subscription

Reports indicate that Facebook Plus and Instagram Plus will cost approximately $3.99 per month, while WhatsApp Plus will be priced at about $2.99 monthly. Subscribers are expected to gain access to advanced profile customization, improved analytics, exclusive stickers and themes, expanded audience reach tools and enhanced content features.

The move comes as Meta increasingly invests heavily in artificial intelligence infrastructure and digital innovation. Industry reports show the company plans to spend between $125 billion and $145 billion this year, largely on AI development, data centers and advanced computing systems.
Meta is also reportedly preparing additional AI-focused subscription packages under a broader strategy known as “Meta One.” The premium AI tiers are expected to provide advanced access to Meta AI tools, including image and video generation capabilities, with prices ranging between $7.99 and $19.99 per month.

Analysts say the introduction of subscription services reflects a growing trend among major technology companies seeking more stable and diversified revenue streams beyond advertising. Advertising still accounts for the vast majority of Meta’s earnings, but increasing competition, privacy regulations and fluctuating digital ad markets have pushed the company to explore alternative income sources.
Despite the launch of paid plans, Meta has emphasized that billions of users worldwide will continue accessing Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp for free. The company says the subscriptions are optional and targeted at users and creators seeking additional features and premium tools.
The announcement was positively received in financial markets, with Meta shares rising following the news as investors welcomed the company’s efforts to diversify its revenue streams amid rising AI-related spending.
