The National Police Service has initiated investigations into a security breach that occurred during President William Ruto's public address in Ganze, Kilifi County, on Sunday. The incident involved a man who managed to dodge President Ruto's security detail and joined him on stage during a thanksgiving service for Youth Principal Secretary Fikirini Jacobs.
Investigation and Security Protocol Changes
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has emphasized the seriousness of the breach, stating that despite swift action by security officers at the scene, any security lapse involving the Head of State is highly concerning. "I have immediately constituted a special investigations team to conduct a swift, thorough, and uncompromising inquiry into how this breach occurred," Kanja stated. In response to the incident, the police have made immediate changes to the President’s security detail to enhance security protocols and close potential vulnerabilities.
As part of the security review, several officers from the Police Elite Unit and Recce Squad were reassigned, and some senior officers were asked to proceed on leave pending retirement. Noah Kirwa Maiyo, the Commandant of the Presidential Escort Unit, was transferred to the Kenya Police Headquarters under the Vigilance Department. His position has since been filled by William Sawe, previously Commanding Officer of the Recce Sub Unit. These steps are part of broader efforts to strengthen presidential security and prevent future breaches.
IG Kanja has assured the public that the police are committed to maintaining the highest security standards for the President, national leadership, and the nation. The investigation aims to identify vulnerabilities and ensure accountability. The police have also vowed to implement lessons learned to improve the resilience of presidential security arrangements.
The incident and subsequent police response underscore the importance of robust security protocols for protecting high-profile political figures. As investigations continue, the public and political leaders alike will be watching to see how effectively the security lapses are addressed and what measures are put in place to bolster presidential security moving forward.
