The Ministry of Interior and National Administration has issued an urgent flood warning for residents living along rivers in Kisumu County, Tana River County, and Uasin Gishu County as heavy rains continue to batter parts of the country. Authorities have also confirmed that 84 people have died, with three others still missing, following recent flooding incidents nationwide.
In a statement released Tuesday, the ministry warned that rising water levels in major rivers pose a significant risk to nearby communities, urging residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas to move to safer ground immediately. Emergency response teams have been deployed to the affected regions to assist with evacuations and provide relief support.
The government said search and rescue operations are ongoing for the missing individuals, even as humanitarian agencies intensify efforts to reach displaced families. Several homes have been submerged, infrastructure damaged, and farmlands destroyed, worsening the humanitarian situation.
Officials attributed the floods to sustained heavy rainfall that has caused rivers to overflow, particularly in western and coastal regions. The ministry emphasized the need for heightened vigilance, noting that more rainfall is expected in the coming days.
