Collins Buop: How a Former Hotelier Built One of Kenya’s Fastest-Growing Auto Parts Businesses
From Hotels to High Gear: The Rise of Petro Auto Parts
The used auto parts industry is booming across Africa, and one entrepreneur making waves is Collins Buop, the Dubai-based founder of Petro Auto Parts. What makes his journey remarkable is that Collins started his career in the hotel industry, yet today he manages one of Kenya’s fastest-rising auto spares shops.
Collins spent over a decade in the UAE, balancing a day job in hospitality with a growing business that supplies spare parts across Kenya and other African countries. With more than six years of experience dealing in used car parts, he officially launched Petro Auto Parts in 2020.
Located along Jogoo Road near Mogus Petrol Station in Nairobi, the shop has quickly built a loyal customer base thanks to affordability, reliability, and excellent customer service. Petro Auto Parts specializes in Volkswagen and Audi spares, offering everything from control arms, shock absorbers, taillights, and radiators to full engines.
Collins attributes his business growth to careful management, a well-informed local team, reliable suppliers, and trusted shipping partners that ensure smooth importation from Dubai. He sources parts from reputable dismantlers in the UAE, conducting quality checks before items reach Kenyan customers.
“We ship bulky parts like engines and transmissions by sea,” Collins explains. “For smaller or urgent orders—like sensors, side mirrors, or grilles—we use air freight to reduce wait times.”
To further streamline logistics, Collins works with trusted shipping companies such as Mombasa Cargo, Submarine Cargo, Diamond Cargo, and Sailing Cargo. Local mechanics assist in testing and preparing items for sale, guaranteeing that every part meets quality standards.
Despite challenges like rising taxes, fluctuating forex rates, and occasional political disruptions, Petro Auto Parts continues to grow steadily. A significant factor in this success is Collins’ savvy use of digital platforms. The business actively engages customers on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Telegram, providing real-time updates and direct support. Many sales come from referrals and repeat customers who value both quality and service.
Beyond running a thriving business, Collins is an inspiration for young entrepreneurs, especially those in the diaspora. His advice is simple yet powerful:
“Social media isn’t just for watching videos or liking posts. If you use it well, it can help you build something real. Stay focused, stay consistent, and spend your time on things that actually matter.”
Looking ahead, Collins plans to give customers a behind-the-scenes look at how he sources parts in Dubai, further strengthening trust and transparency in his brand.
Petro Auto Parts isn’t just a business—it’s a testament to how vision, persistence, and smart use of technology can turn a passion into a thriving enterprise.
