Cecilia Wanjiku: Teenage Hero Who Ran Into Fire to Save Her Sisters at Utumishi Girls Academy

Remembering Cecilia Wanjiku – A Brave 16-Year-Old Who Sacrificed Herself for Others

In the chaos of May 28, when flames engulfed Meline Waithera Dormitory at Utumishi Girls Academy, one student stood out not for fleeing, but for running straight into danger. Cecilia Wanjiku, a Form Three student, did not run out—she ran in.

Witnesses recall that Cecilia heard the terrified screams from the upper floor as smoke filled the two-storey building. While others scrambled for safety, she grabbed a blanket, soaked it with water, and charged through the raging fire toward the cubicles where 135 double-decker beds held sleeping girls.

Her classmates still remember her voice cutting through the panic: “Follow me, low, low!” With courage and determination, she pulled younger students from burning beds, shielding them with her own body as embers rained down around them. The heat was unbearable, and the first floor eventually collapsed in flames. Yet Cecilia pressed on toward the back cubicles until the fire trapped her.

She never made it out.

Cecilia Wanjiku is among the 16 students who tragically lost their lives in the fire that has left Gilgil mourning. At just 16, she chose courage over fear, and sisterhood over survival. Today, at Utumishi Girls Academy, her name is spoken in whispers and prayers—a symbol of selflessness, bravery, and the power of putting others before oneself.
