Speculation has been growing within Kenya’s political circles about whether Edwin Sifuna could be preparing to exit the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) following recent internal disagreements and debates over the party’s direction.
However, political observers and insiders within the party say such a move remains highly unlikely, despite the tensions that have occasionally surfaced between different factions of the party.
The debate over Sifuna’s future in ODM intensified after he publicly raised concerns about certain political developments, including the evolving relationship between leaders aligned to President William Ruto and figures within ODM associated with party leader Raila Odinga.
Sifuna has been among the most outspoken voices in the party when it comes to defending ODM’s traditional role as a strong opposition force. His statements questioning cooperation with the ruling coalition have fueled speculation that he may be uncomfortable with the party’s current political direction.
These remarks have triggered conversations across political forums and social media platforms, with some supporters asking whether Sifuna could eventually consider charting his own political path outside ODM.

Why Sifuna Is Unlikely to Leave

Despite the speculation, several factors suggest that Sifuna’s departure from ODM is unlikely in the near future
First, Sifuna has built most of his political career within ODM and has repeatedly affirmed his loyalty to the party and its leadership. As Secretary-General and a key strategist, he remains deeply embedded in the party’s structures and decision-making processes.
Second, ODM continues to be one of the most influential political parties in Kenya, and leaving such an established political platform would carry significant political risks.
Political analysts argue that even when disagreements arise within parties, leaders often choose to remain and push for change internally rather than abandoning the party altogether.
“Sifuna’s political identity is strongly tied to ODM,” said one Nairobi-based analyst. “While internal debates are normal in any political party, that does not necessarily mean a leader is preparing to leave.”
Internal Debate Is Part of Party Politics
Observers also note that ODM has historically been a party where internal debate is common. Leaders frequently express differing opinions on strategy, alliances, and national policy, but such disagreements often occur within the broader framework of party unity.
Sifuna himself has emphasized on several occasions that internal discussions are healthy for democracy and should not be interpreted as signs of division or imminent departure.
In many cases, such debates reflect broader conversations within the party about how best to position itself in Kenya’s rapidly evolving political landscape.
Another factor that makes an exit unlikely is the strong personal and political relationship between Sifuna and Raila Odinga, who has remained the central figure within ODM since the party’s formation.
Many of the party’s senior leaders have maintained long-standing ties with Odinga, and political loyalty to the party leader often plays a significant role in shaping internal dynamics.
Because of this, analysts believe that any disagreements within ODM are more likely to be resolved internally rather than leading to a dramatic political split.
As Kenya’s political environment continues to shift, debates within ODM about strategy and alliances are likely to continue. However, most observers believe that Sifuna will remain within the party and continue playing a key role in shaping its political messaging and parliamentary strategy.
For now, the speculation surrounding his possible exit appears to be more a reflection of the intense political discussions within the party than any concrete plan for him to leave.
Whether these debates will influence ODM’s future direction remains to be seen, but one thing appears clear: Edwin Sifuna remains a central figure within the party’s political structure
