The National Police Service (NPS) has announced traffic disruptions around Nyayo National Stadium ahead of this weekend’s World Rugby Sevens Division II Nairobi tournament.
According to NPS Assistant Superintendent Silas Bundi, Douglas Wakiihuri Road (formerly Aerodrome Road) will be closed to motorists starting at midnight on Friday. Portions of Mombasa Road and Lang’ata Road will also face partial closures between Lusaka and Bunyala roundabouts to facilitate smooth and secure access to the stadium.
Bundi said the measures are aimed at ensuring the safety of fans attending the two-day event and cautioned those without business at the stadium to avoid the area. He added that traffic officers will be deployed to manage vehicle flow and guide motorists to alternative routes. Motorists heading to the Central Business District (CBD) from Mombasa Road have been advised to use different routes.
There will be no parking available at Nyayo Stadium during the event. Bundi encouraged attendees to park in the city centre or at other convenient locations away from the venue.
NPS Assistant Inspector General Edward Achola, who addressed the media alongside Bundi, outlined the security and access arrangements. He said there will be two entry points along Mombasa Road and two along Lang’ata Road. Gate A will be reserved for VIPs, Gate B for VVIPs, and Gate C strictly for officials and teams. Other gates will be open to regular ticket holders. Achola added that five exit points have been designated to ease movement after the matches and urged fans without tickets not to attempt accessing the stadium.
In a related development, the government has closed the Moi International Sports Centre (MISC), Kasarani, to allow for final upgrades in preparation for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), which Kenya will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.
Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi also announced that Nyayo Stadium will undergo final renovations after hosting the rugby tournament. Speaking at the venue, he revealed that the government has committed Sh100 million to support the Nairobi Sevens event. Although MISC has been closed, it was temporarily reopened to host the CAF Confederation Cup match between Nairobi United and Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca last Sunday.
