As divisions deepen within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), a high-profile grassroots mobilisation effort dubbed the “Linda Mwananchi” Tour is set to reach Kakamega County, marking a new phase in the campaign that organisers say will amplify ordinary Kenyans’ voices on key social and economic issues.
Launched earlier this month by a faction aligned with Edwin Sifuna, alongside veteran leaders such as James Orengo and Babu Owino, the tour is framed as a direct response to growing discontent over the cost of living, governance challenges and the political direction of the country as the nation approaches the 2027 General Election.
Organisers describe “Linda Mwananchi” Swahili for “Protect the Citizen” as a people-centred outreach designed to listen to grassroots concerns, articulate citizens’ priorities, and hold leaders accountable for everyday hardships. It is intended to build momentum among voters who feel left out of elite negotiations and rhetoric.
The Kakamega leg of the tour comes amid a widening rift within ODM, with competing initiatives such as the “Linda Ground” programme backed by other party figures holding separate engagements in the region. Observers say the overlapping activities reflect broader tensions over leadership succession, strategy and whether the party should align with the ruling coalition ahead of the next election.
In earlier stops, including a high-turnout meeting in Busia County, speakers rejected proposed cooperation with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and reiterated a commitment to an independent political path for ODM in the 2027 polls.
The tour has not been without controversy; at recent gatherings, organisers publicly warned of alleged plans to disrupt events, underscoring the contentious atmosphere surrounding the mobilisation.
As the “Linda Mwananchi” tour moves into Kakamega, supporters say it will offer a crucial platform for the region’s residents including youth, workers, farmers, and business owners to share their experiences and expectations with political actors vying for influence in Kenya’s evolving political landscape.
