The Matatu Owners Association (MOA) has assured Kenyans that public transport services will operate normally across the country on Thursday, June 25, despite concerns over planned demonstrations marking the anniversary of the June 2024 Gen Z protests.
In a statement issued ahead of the planned commemorations, the association dismissed reports suggesting there would be a nationwide transport shutdown, saying matatu operators have not called for any suspension of services. It urged commuters to continue with their daily activities while observing safety precautions.
The association also called on matatu operators to remain vigilant and prioritise the safety of passengers and crew members throughout the day. Operators were advised to cooperate with security agencies and monitor the situation on the ground in areas where demonstrations may occur.
Public Urged to Remain Calm
The MOA appealed to the public not to panic over social media reports predicting a transport shutdown, reiterating that no directive has been issued to halt operations. The association said its members are expected to continue providing transport services unless local security conditions require temporary adjustments.
Heightened Security Ahead of June 25
The assurance comes as security agencies prepare for demonstrations expected in several parts of the country to mark the second anniversary of the 2024 anti-government protests. Authorities have indicated that security measures will be in place to maintain public order, while transport operators have been encouraged to remain alert and work closely with law enforcement.
The Matatu Owners Association maintained that its priority is ensuring that Kenyans can access public transport safely while encouraging all parties to uphold peace and avoid actions that could endanger lives or property.
