The Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Human Rights Violations has disbursed over Ksh.674.1 million to 505 verified victims connected to demonstrations and protests. The initiative aims to provide justice and reparations to those affected by human rights abuses during these public events.
Second Phase of Compensation Program
According to chairperson Makau Mutua, the second phase of the compensation program involved 157 claims, totaling Ksh.225.4 million. This phase included claims from families of fatalities, victims of severe injuries, moderate injuries, minor injuries, and cases of aggravated sexual offences. The targeted approach highlights the government's commitment to addressing past human rights violations linked to civil unrest.
Families of those who lost their lives received Ksh.3 million each, while victims of severe injuries and aggravated sexual offences each received Ksh.1 million. Moderate injury claimants were awarded Ksh.500,000, and those with minor injuries received Ksh.50,000. These figures reflect the severity of the violations and the government’s effort to provide meaningful reparations to the victims.
The initiative underscores ongoing efforts by the Kenyan government to rectify injustices related to protests and demonstrate a commitment to human rights. However, the process and its outcomes also bring to light ongoing debates about justice, accountability, and the adequacy of compensation for human rights violations during politically turbulent times.
As the program continues, it remains to be seen whether these measures will contribute to healing and reconciliation, or if they will spark further discussions and calls for justice from victims and human rights advocates. The official response from various stakeholders concerning the adequacy and implementation of this compensation scheme is eagerly awaited.
