Days after the brutal killing of city lawyer Kyalo Mbobu, tributes are continuing to pour in.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen spoken emotionally about his connection with the late lawyer, who was fatally shot along Magadi Road on September 8.
What was Murkomen's relationship with Mbobu? During a live interview on Citizen TV on Monday, September 15, Murkomen revealed that Mbobu had once been his lecturer at the University of Nairobi, before the two later became colleagues in the institution’s law faculty.
“He was my teacher. He taught me the law of evidence in two semesters. Later on, we worked together as lecturers at the institution. For me, this is personal, and I wish to send my condolences to his wife and children,” Murkomen said. The CS described Mbobu as a man who contributed immensely to legal education and noted that his sudden death had robbed the legal fraternity and the country of a brilliant mind.
Murkomen added that he trusted the country’s security agencies to get to the bottom of the crime, stressing that Kenyans needed to remain calm while detectives continued their work. “I have no doubt that we have men and women with the capacity and commitment to unravel the people behind this heinous act. Let us exercise patience and give them the time to do this,” he stated. The interview, which brought together several top government officials including Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Mohamed Amin, also offered fresh updates on the progress of investigations.
What update did police give on Kyalo Mbobu's murder probe?
Kanja explained that detectives had secured promising leads into the murder and that the probe was at an advanced stage. He confirmed that three people had been arrested earlier but were released after being cleared, though they remained of interest to investigators. “Investigations are in progress, and I have instructed the DCI to move with speed. We are following very useful leads and are confident we will catch the culprits,” Kanja said. He also raised concerns about the hesitation of potential witnesses to come forward with information that could help in tracking down those responsible.

On his part, Amin shared that a strong homicide team had been formed specifically for the case. He emphasised the seriousness with which the matter was being handled, noting that although three people were freed, they remained on the radar. “We are treating this as a top priority. My detectives are sifting through evidence, and we have already gathered critical leads. While we cannot disclose all details now, I want to assure Kenyans that we are closing in on the killers,” Amin explained.
Meanwhile, TOP PRIME reported that sources familiar with the probe revealed that seven people, including close relatives, colleagues, and friends of the late lawyer, had been questioned. The director of a company that had a legal dispute with Mbobu was also interviewed, though none of those questioned have been classified as suspects. Detectives also retrieved key documents from Mbobu’s office that are expected to guide the investigation further.
