Kenya is actively seeking new financial support from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) to advance several major infrastructure initiatives. These projects are crucial for strengthening regional connectivity and boosting economic growth across East Africa.
Kenya Looks to AIIB for Support on Mau Summit–Malaba Expressway and Airport Modernization
The focus is on a 243-kilometre Mau Summit–Malaba Expressway, which is expected to significantly improve transportation along the corridor, facilitate regional trade, and strengthen Kenya’s links with neighboring countries. Additionally, part of the funding will be allocated for modernizing Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), aiming to enhance capacity and regional operational standards.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi announced on September 10, 2026, that Kenya is in discussions with the AIIB for financial support that could potentially cover these vital infrastructure projects. The government’s strategic move aligns with its broader plans to improve infrastructure, attract investment, and promote economic integration within East Africa.
These infrastructure initiatives are part of Kenya’s wider development agenda, targeting enhanced regional connectivity, increased trade, and economic resilience. The proposed expressway and airport upgrades are projected to facilitate smoother logistics, reduce transit times, and foster regional cooperation.
As Kenya advances these projects with the support of AIIB, it underscores the country's commitment to sustainable infrastructure growth and regional development. The outcomes are anticipated to boost Kenya’s economic competitiveness and improve the quality of life for its citizens, while also strengthening its leadership in regional infrastructure planning.
