The Family Group Foundation has taken a major step toward youth empowerment and economic inclusion by signing a strategic partnership with the Military Wives Association of Kenya (MWAK). This collaboration aims to formally institutionalise technical and vocational skills training within the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), offering military families a structured pathway to acquire marketable skills and entrepreneurial knowledge.

Since its inception, the programme has already benefitted 290 dependents, aged 18–25, of service personnel across the Kenya Defence Forces. By equipping these young people with practical skills, the initiative enhances their employability and opens doors to entrepreneurial ventures, creating a ripple effect of socio-economic benefits within military communities.

The significance of the partnership was highlighted during the 4th cohort graduation, held at Embakasi Garrison, where 89 Kenya Army Force servicemen and women dependents received certificates marking the successful completion of the programme. Chief of Defence Forces, General Charles Kahariri, attended the ceremony and commended the programme for its transformative impact.

“I would like to appreciate the strong partnership of the Military Wives Association of Kenya and The Family Group Foundation. This is indeed a truly great creation that has equipped these young men and women with not only technical skills but has also instilled in them confidence,” said General Kahariri.

The graduation marked the fourth successful cohort, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 290 young individuals. The first cohort graduated 51 young people from Kenya Army dependents, followed by 50 graduates from the Kenya Air Force, and 100 graduates from the Kenya Navy dependents in the third cohort. This milestone demonstrates the programme’s consistency and the growing reach of its impact across different branches of the Kenya Defence Forces.

Family Bank, through its philanthropic arm, The Family Group Foundation, has been a key supporter of the initiative. Nancy Njau, Family Bank CEO, emphasized the organisation’s commitment to creating meaningful social impact.
“At Family Bank, we believe in promoting positive social impact. This partnership represents our commitment to strengthening communities and creating opportunities for our young people. By formalising our partnership with the Military Wives Association, we look forward to empowering the next generation through education, skills development, and mentorship, ensuring that every young person has the tools to succeed and contribute meaningfully to society,” said Njau.

The programme’s impact extends beyond graduation ceremonies. Beneficiaries have successfully transitioned into the workforce, taking on skilled trades within the Kenya Defence Forces, venturing into private employment, and establishing their own small businesses. These young entrepreneurs are now contributing to local economic growth while gaining financial independence and professional confidence.

“Through our partnership with The Family Group Foundation, these students have been equipped with essential skills to navigate the complexities of modern life and build a more resilient future. This joint effort strengthens our mission to empower and uplift young talent,” said Military Wives Association of Kenya Chairlady Grace Kahariri.

Beyond skills training and entrepreneurship, the partnership is committed to broader social interventions. Future initiatives will include high school scholarship programmes to support academic pursuits, psychosocial support initiatives to strengthen mental health and resilience, and climate action projects aimed at environmental conservation and ecosystem restoration. These programs align with the shared vision of both organisations to drive inclusive socio-economic development and ensure that beneficiaries become responsible, impactful members of society.

The programme also provides mentorship opportunities, where graduates are guided by experienced professionals in their chosen fields. Mentorship has been a critical component, instilling leadership qualities, enhancing problem-solving abilities, and providing insights into navigating professional challenges. By pairing skills development with mentorship, the programme ensures that beneficiaries not only gain technical competence but also develop the confidence and mindset to thrive in the workforce or in entrepreneurship.

Additionally, the initiative highlights the importance of structured support for military families. Dependents of service personnel often face unique challenges, including frequent relocations and limited access to stable educational or vocational resources. By addressing these gaps, the partnership between The Family Group Foundation and MWAK is creating a sustainable framework that equips young people with tools to succeed regardless of circumstances.

This initiative stands as a model for other organizations seeking to engage in community-driven empowerment programs. Its holistic approach — combining education, vocational skills, mentorship, psychosocial support, and environmental stewardship — demonstrates how multi-dimensional strategies can lead to tangible and lasting societal impact.

As the partnership continues to expand, more cohorts are expected to benefit, ensuring that the programme reaches a wider group of young people across the Kenya Defence Forces. By fostering skill development, promoting entrepreneurship, and supporting social welfare initiatives, this collaboration not only strengthens military families but also contributes to the national goal of inclusive socio-economic development.

The strategic partnership between The Family Group Foundation and the Military Wives Association of Kenya is more than a skills training initiative. It is a transformative programme that empowers young dependents of military personnel, nurtures entrepreneurial spirit, provides mentorship, and supports broader community development. Through this collaboration, the next generation of Kenya Defence Forces dependents is being equipped to face challenges, seize opportunities, and contribute meaningfully to society.
