In one of the most dramatic twists of the 2025-26 English Premier League season, Arsenal were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Wolves at Molineux Stadium on Wednesday night after surrendering a two-goal lead in stoppage time. What appeared destined to be a routine top-of-the-table victory instead turned into a late-game heartbreaker that could have lasting implications on the title race.

Early Arsenal Dominance

Arsenal set the tone early in the Midlands, showing intent from the opening whistle. Just five minutes into the match, Bukayo Saka broke the deadlock, heading home from close range to give the visitors an early advantage. The goal marked Saka’s first of the season in 16 games and provided a morale boost after recent inconsistent performances.

The Gunners maintained control throughout the first half, circulating possession expertly and limiting Wolfe’s chances. Arsenal’s midfield, anchored by Declan Rice and Martín Zubimendi, dictated play and restricted Wolves until the break.

Second Half: A Growing Advantage

Arsenal doubled their lead in the 56th minute through Piero Hincapié, whose first goal for the club came after a well-executed attack. Following a slide rule pass from Gabriel, the Ecuadorian defender cleverly lofted the ball over Wolves keeper José Sá, putting Arsenal 2-0 ahead and looking in complete control.

At this stage, it seemed Arsenal were on course not only for three important points but also to extend their lead at the top of the league to seven points – a crucial buffer in the title race.

Wolves Fight Back

However, Wolves refused to wilt in the face of adversity. Roberto Edwards’ side steadily gained confidence, and their persistence paid off in the 61st minute when Hugo Bueno unleashed a stunning curling effort from outside the box, beating David Raya and pulling a goal back. The strike gave Wolves renewed belief and shifted momentum toward the home side.

As the clock wound down, Wolves sensed an opportunity and continued to push forward. Arsenal began to look nervy, with sloppy possession and missed chances to put the game beyond doubt.

Late Heartbreak: Edozie’s Stoppage-Time Equaliser

The dramatic turning point came deep into stoppage time. In the 94th minute, substitute Tom Edozie – making his Premier League debut – scrambled home a loose ball after a cross caused chaos in the Arsenal penalty area. The shot ricocheted off defender Riccardo Calafiori and nestled into the back of the net, sending Molineux into raptures and condemning Arsenal to a painful 2-2 draw.

The result triggered scenes of disbelief among Arsenal fans and frustration for Mikel Arteta, whose side had wasted a golden chance to extend their lead at the summit.

Implications for the Premier League Title Race

This draw represents a significant blow for Arsenal’s title bid. Instead of moving seven points clear of second-placed Manchester City, the Gunners now lead by a narrower margin and have played a game more than their closest rivals. The late concession raises questions about Arsenal’s defensive resilience and ability to maintain consistency in the most intense moments of the campaign.

Wolves, who sit rooted at the bottom of the table, now have something to celebrate – a spirited comeback that injects belief into their survival fight and halts a long winless run against the league leaders.

Looking Ahead

For Arsenal, the challenge now is to regroup quickly. With a fixture list packed with high-stakes matches, including a looming North London derby and a pivotal showdown with Manchester City at the Etihad, Arteta’s men can ill afford another slip. Wolves, meanwhile, will draw confidence from their battling performance and aim to build on this result in the fight to escape the relegation zone.
