Ruto Signals Bid to Extend Stay in Power Until 2032
President William Ruto has indicated his intention to seek re-election in 2027, a move that could see him remain in office until 2032 if he secures a second and final term under Kenya’s Constitution.
Speaking during recent public engagements, President Ruto expressed confidence in his administration’s development agenda and urged Kenyans to support his leadership beyond his current term. He said his government needs more time to fully implement key projects aimed at transforming the economy and improving the livelihoods of ordinary citizens.
“I am focused on delivering on our promises to the people of Kenya. With your support, we will continue building a stronger and more prosperous nation,” Ruto stated.
Under the 2010 Constitution, a president in Kenya can serve a maximum of two five-year terms. Ruto, who was elected in August 2022 and sworn in in September the same year, is currently serving his first term, which runs until 2027. If re-elected, his second term would end in 2032.
Development Agenda
The President has repeatedly defended his Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which focuses on empowering small-scale traders, farmers, and youth through affordable credit, housing projects, digital jobs, and agricultural reforms.
Supporters argue that extending his leadership would ensure continuity of major projects such as the Affordable Housing Programme, expansion of infrastructure, and reforms in the health and education sectors.
Political Reactions
Ruto’s remarks have already sparked political debate across the country. Some leaders allied to the President have publicly endorsed his potential 2027 re-election bid, saying stability is key for economic growth.
However, critics argue that the government must first address concerns over the high cost of living, taxation policies, and public debt before seeking another mandate from voters.
Political analysts say the coming months will likely see increased political alignments and early campaign strategies as leaders position themselves ahead of the next General Election.
As the political landscape continues to shift, all eyes will be on how President Ruto navigates his first term and whether his policies will win him enough support to secure leadership until 2032.
